Historical Origins & Development
4th Ewell (Nonsuch) Scout Group was established in October 1944 under the leadership of Mr T. O. Chalk, with its first Cub Pack and Scout Troop meeting in a small hall in West Street, Ewell. As membership grew rapidly, the Group sought larger premises.
By March 1945, the Group had outgrown its original venue, and a site adjacent to Ewell Park Hospital was leased after negotiations with local authorities. A hut was purchased from 8th Wimbledon Scout Troop and erected on this site by October 1947, providing a dedicated Scout headquarters.
In the post-war years, the Group expanded with the formation of a Senior Troop in June 1948. Later, the headquarters moved to a hut in Elmwood Drive, Stoneleigh, but by the early 1960s the Group needed more secure and larger facilities. A building committee was formed, and through cooperation with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and parental support, a new headquarters adjacent to “Bluegates” on London Road was opened on 22 April 1967; this site was subsequently expanded with extensions and additional garages.
When the lease for that site expired in the late 1980s, the Group negotiated for a new permanent home, and a modern, purpose-built headquarters on its present site was officially opened in May 1989. Over the decades, the Group has adapted its structure and sections to reflect the evolving Scout Movement, including the addition of a Venture Scout Unit and Beaver Colony, and the formal inclusion of girls within the Scout Troop.
4th Ewell has a history of strong participation in District and County competitions and has produced Scouts achieving high awards such as Chief Scout Awards and Queen’s Scout Awards, reflecting both the quality of its programme and the dedication of its leaders and members.
Headquarters & Facilities
4th Ewell (Nonsuch) Scout Group meets at its Scout Headquarters on London Road (Bluegates), Ewell, Surrey, KT17 2SA. The Group is fortunate to have a modern, purpose-built and centrally heated headquarters, originally opened in 1989 following extensive local fundraising and support.
The headquarters features two large activity halls (upstairs and downstairs), multiple smaller activity rooms, a large kitchen, shower and disabled toilet facilities. The site also includes a well-equipped kit store containing a range of tents (including marquee and dome tents), tables, benches, cooking equipment, games and other resources to support a broad programme of Scouting activities.
Group vehicles include two minibuses, a large panel van and a box trailer, which are maintained by volunteers and available for use within Scouting activities and expeditions.
