Historical Origins & Development
3rd Epsom (St Martins) Scout Group was formally registered in September 1922, developing from an earlier troop established in 1918. This makes it the oldest continuously registered Scout Group in Epsom & Ewell District, with more than a century of uninterrupted Scouting activity in the local area.
In its early years, the Group was closely linked to the parish community around St Martins, reflecting the strong role local churches played in the growth of Scouting during the early twentieth century. Through the inter-war period and beyond, the Group became a permanent fixture in Epsom, adapting its programme to meet the needs of successive generations of young people.
Like many Scout Groups, 3rd Epsom continued to operate through periods of national challenge, including the Second World War and the post-war years, evolving its structure and sections as Scouting itself developed. Over time, the Group expanded to support multiple sections, maintaining a strong emphasis on participation, leadership and service while remaining rooted in the core principles of the Scout Movement.
Today, 3rd Epsom (St Martins) Scout Group continues its long tradition of local Scouting, balancing historical continuity with a modern programme that supports young people’s personal development and engagement within the wider District.
Headquarters & Facilities
3rd Epsom (St Martins) Scout Group is based at its Scout Headquarters behind St John Chandler Hall on Church Road, Epsom (KT17 4AB). The site has been the Group’s home since the post-war period and reflects the long-standing relationship between the Group and the local parish community.
The original Scout & Guide hut was constructed in 1947, following the Second World War, providing a permanent base for Scouting activities at a time when youth organisations were being re-established across the country. As the Group continued to grow, a new purpose-built headquarters was constructed in the early 1960s, replacing the original hut and offering improved facilities for meetings, storage and activities.
Today, the headquarters supports weekly section meetings for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, as well as Group events, training and community use. The location provides both indoor meeting space and access to nearby outdoor areas, enabling a varied programme of activities while remaining closely connected to the local area the Group serves.
