Historical Origins & Development
2nd Stoneleigh (St John’s) Scout Group has a longstanding presence in the local community, evolving over decades into a full-range Scout Group offering age-appropriate Scouting from Beavers to Explorers. While the Group’s website does not publish an exact founding year, its structure and programme reflect mature development within the District’s Scouting history.
The Group’s identity has grown around the Dell Lane Scout & Guide Headquarters, where generations of young people have participated in Scouting activities. In its history, the Group has maintained continuous engagement through changing Scouting milestones, including the introduction of the Beaver section, expansion of badge-work pathways, and the incorporation of modern outdoor adventure elements into its programme.
During its development, 2nd Stoneleigh has taken part in District and County events, camps and challenge weekends, and has embraced evolving best practice in youth development, safeguarding and volunteer training. The result is a legacy of personal achievement, community involvement and broad‐based participation that connects older Scouts with leadership roles and younger members with structured progression pathways.
Today, the Group’s history is also reflected in its portfolio of activities — from traditional skills camps and pioneering projects to modern outdoor programming and community challenges — demonstrating a sustained commitment to the core values and adventurous spirit of Scouting.
