2nd Ewell (Rainsters) Scout Group is a well-established Scout Group in Epsom & Ewell District, offering Scouting for young people from early childhood through adolescence. The Group runs a structured programme of activities for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, combining traditional Scouting principles with skills development, outdoor adventure and community involvement. The Rainsters name reflects a long tradition within the local community dating back to its early years.

Historical Origins & Development

2nd Ewell (Rainsters) Scout Group was first established in 1929, beginning life with sixteen Scouts meeting in the Music Room at Glyn House in Ewell. The Group quickly developed its identity and traditions — its early patrols were given names such as Rattlesnakes, Rams and Tigers.

The Rainsters nickname originated in these early years, reportedly because “it always rains when they go camping,” a badge of honour that stuck as the Group grew.

In the early 1930s the Group expanded rapidly, participating in district rallies and setting formal patrol structures. By 1932, local and national Scouting influences such as the first Gang Show and the Wood Badge programme were integrated into Group life.

During World War II, 2nd Ewell Scouts continued operations amidst national mobilisation, contributing to civil defence efforts and sustaining Scouting activity at home.

Post-war, the Group sought a permanent home. In the late 1940s land at West Street, Ewell became available, and the Group acquired a site to construct its own headquarters. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the Group consolidated its presence, built and improved its HQ facilities, and developed strong ties with local schools and community organisations.

In the 1970s the Group continued to expand its programme and facilities, including the official opening of a new headquarters building in 1972, named Rainlands. Scout events, community involvement and competition successes marked the decade, reinforcing the Group’s reputation within the District.

Since then, 2nd Ewell (Rainsters) has maintained continuous Scouting provision, adapting its programme to the needs of young people while preserving its heritage and community connections.
